A Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) helps protect your computer from power outages, brownouts, and power surges. It provides short-term battery power so you can save your work and shut down your device safely. It also helps prevent damage when power is restored.
Before You Begin
UPS models vary by manufacturer. Always follow the instructions included with your device for model-specific setup.
Set Up the UPS
- Connect the battery
Open the battery compartment and connect the battery as directed.
- This may involve connecting matching colored wires (e.g., red to red, black to black), or
- Positioning the battery so the connectors are aligned correctly
- Plug the UPS into a wall outlet
- Turn on the UPS
Connect Your Devices
UPS units typically include two types of outlets:
- Battery Backup + Surge Protection – provides temporary power during outages
- Surge Protection Only – protects against voltage spikes but does not provide backup power
- Connect essential devices
Plug your computer and monitor into the outlets labeled for battery backup.
- If your UPS includes a master outlet, connect your computer to that outlet
- Connect non-essential devices
Plug devices that do not need to stay powered during an outage (such as printers or speakers) into surge-protection-only outlets
