H5P: Ensuring Grades are Transferred to Brightspace

Introduction

Some H5P content types only send a completed score to Brightspace once the student reaches a final screen — a Summary Slide in Course Presentation, or a Submit Screen in Interactive Video. If that screen is hidden or deleted, students can't finalize their attempt, and no grade transfers. This article covers the Course Presentation H5P interactive.

Step-by-Step Instructions

H5P Course Presentation

  1. Log in to Brightspace and access your course.
  2. Locate your H5P content in the Content area of your course.
  3. Once you have located the H5P activity, click on the three dots to go to Edit.
  4. Next, on the H5P embedded element, click on Edit once more.
  5. Scroll down to Behavior Settings and expand the panel.
  6. If "Hide Summary Slide" is enabled, uncheck the box.

What happens if the Summary/Submit Screen is missing?

  • If the Hide Summary Slide option is enabled, students may reach the final question in the H5P interactive without seeing the Summary/Submit screen.

This can prevent students from completing the final submission step. As a result:

  • Students may not have an option to submit their completed responses.
  • Student results may not be properly recorded for reporting or gradebook purposes.
  • Instructors may be unable to review the student's attempt or results in H5P Reports.

How are student able to submit their responses to the Gradebook?

  • To ensure students can complete and submit their H5P interactive, the Hide Summary Slide option should be disabled. When the Summary Slide is displayed, students will see the submission option after completing the interactive. Students should select the submission button to finalize their attempt and allow their results to be recorded.

Where can faculty check if the results are being collected for H5P interactives?

  • Faculty can review student participation, attempts, and submission data from the Reports section of H5P.

    After students successfully submit their responses:

  1. Open the H5P interactive.

  2. Select Reports.

  3. Review the available student attempt and submission information.

Note: The Virtual Tour 360 may contain tasks with scores per task; it does not have any concept of completion (there is no check button or submit button at the end and no summary screen) and thus it does not send any scores via LTI to the LMS.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If the setting is now fixed but a student's grade still isn't showing, they likely need to retry the attempt — a completion made while the screen was hidden/missing may not retroactively register.
  • Confirm the H5P activity is actually linked to a grade item in Brightspace, not just that the display setting is fixed (Edit → LTI Settings → "Choose when to send scores to the LMS").
  • If an instructor copied this content from another course, re-verify that these settings didn't carry over incorrectly.
  • For Interactive Video specifically, confirm the video actually contains a graded interaction — without one, no Submit Screen (or score) will ever appear, and that's expected behavior, not a bug.
  • Test with a student account before telling the instructor it's resolved — grade sync issues are easy to think you've fixed when you haven't.

No — Question Set and similar content types submit grades per-question via a Check button, not through an end screen.

A student already attempted it while the summary was hidden — will their score appear once I fix the setting?

The student's attempt will be overridden. Let students know to resubmit their choices for a grade.

How do I check if the fix actually worked?

Have a test student account attempt it, or check Grades → Manage Grades to confirm scores are populating.

My Interactive Video has no Submit Screen, and I didn't hide anything — what happened?

Either no graded interaction was added to the video, or the Submit Screen marker was accidentally deleted while editing the timeline.
