This article pertains to users participating in the Brightspace Pilot program during the Spring 2025 semester.
Introduction:
Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Brightspace. LockDown Browser is the best choice for securing online exams in classrooms or proctored environments.
To set up a test in Brightspace that requires students to use Respondus LockDown Browser, follow these steps:
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- 1. Access your Brightspace course.
- 2. From the Activities dropdown menu, choose “Quizzes” and click on the “LockDown Browser” tab.
- 3. A list of deployed tests will be displayed.
- 4. To make changes to the settings, click “Settings” from the context menu to the left of the test title and select the desired settings.
- 5. You can also require that Lockdown Browser be used to view test results and feedback from this page. Additionally, you can also set a password that your students must enter before starting the test. Note: Certain settings may be at the discretion of your department.
- What is Respondus Monitor?
Respondus Monitor is the webcam feature for the LockDown browser, which records students while taking an online, non-proctored exam. When this feature is enabled for an exam, students must use a webcam and microphone with the Lockdown browser. Once a student completes the exam, instructors can review assessment details and even the recorded videos recorded during the exam.
- Using Respondus Monitor (webcam feature)
Once you set an exam to require the LockDown browser, you will have several options available for Respondus Monitor. For all students to use the Respondus monitor, select “Require Respondus Monitor for this exam". You have the option of recording the webcam only or the webcam and the student screen.
You can now select the items to be included in the startup sequence, including the steps a student must complete before accessing an exam. Most settings are optional. You may remove/add them by deselecting/checking them.
- There are several advanced settings available to you:
- a.Allows students to access the Respondus Lockdown Monitor exam using an iPad.
- b.Give the instructor the ability to have the test use Respondus LockDown capability while in a proctored lab setting.
- c. Give students an extra workspace at the end of the exam to show their work and attach a photo of their exam notes.
- 6. Click Save and Close.
