Brightspace How course activity types interact with automatic zero grading

This article pertains to users participating in the Brightspace Pilot program during the Spring 2025 semester.


Introduction:

Brightspace’s automatic zero grading feature works with different activity types, like assignments and quizzes. If a student misses the deadline, the system automatically assigns a zero, streamlining the grading process.


Supported course activities:

Supported activity type
Triggers automatic zero grade when: Does not trigger automatic zero when:
Assignment file submission
  • The activity submission due date is missed
  • The special access due date for a user is missed
  • Activity is hidden by either visibility rules or a release condition, when the due date passes
  • An activity is exempted for a user, even if the user misses the due date
Assignment text submission
  • The activity submission due date is missed
  • The special access due date for a user is missed
  • Activity is hidden by either visibility rules or a release condition, when the due date passes
  • An activity is exempted for a user, even if the user misses the due date
LTI activity
  • The LTI completion status is not complete or a score has not been received
  • The LTI activity due date is missed
  • An LTI activity is marked as complete or has already been graded before the due date
Asynchronous quiz
  • A user has not submitted any attempts
     
  • A quiz is in progress but not submitted before the due date
  • A quiz attempt is submitted before the due date
