Introduction:
This article guides students on how to easily access their WeBWorK assignments and course materials directly from their Brightspace course.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Navigating to Your Brightspace Course
- Log in to your institution's Brightspace (D2L) learning management system.
- From your Brightspace homepage, select the course that uses WeBWorK.
Step 2: Locating the WeBWorK Link
Your instructor will place the WeBWorK link in a prominent location within your course. Look for it in one of the following areas:
-
Content: This is the most common place.
- Click on Content in your course navigation bar.
- Look for a module titled "WeBWorK Assignments," "Homework," "Course Materials," or a module specifically for WeBWorK.
- Within that module, you should see a link titled "WeBWorK," "WeBWorK Homework," or similar.
-
Course Home / Widgets: Some instructors might add a direct link on the course homepage as a widget.
-
Modules / Weekly Content: Check within your weekly or unit modules if your instructor organizes content by week.
Step 3: Launching WeBWorK
-
Click on the WeBWorK link (or whatever your instructor has named it) in your Brightspace course.
-
A new window or tab will open, and you should be taken directly to your WeBWorK assignment page.
- Note: WeBWorK typically integrates using LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability), meaning your Brightspace login often automatically logs you into WeBWorK without needing separate credentials
Step 4: First-Time Access and Potential Prompts
For your very first access to WeBWorK from a new course, you might encounter a brief loading screen or a prompt for a "tool launch." This is normal as Brightspace establishes the connection.
- If you are asked to log in to WeBWorK:
- Try your Brightspace username and password first. Sometimes, institutions configure WeBWorK to use the same credentials.
- Look for an option like "Login through LTI" or "Single Sign-On."
- If your instructor provided specific WeBWorK login details, use those.
- Most commonly, you should be logged in automatically. If you're consistently asked for credentials, please contact your instructor.
Step 5: Working on WeBWorK Assignments
Once you are in WeBWorK:
- You will typically see a list of available homework sets.
- Click on a homework set to begin working on the problems.
- Enter your answers in the provided fields.
- Use the "Check Answers" or "Submit" button (wording may vary) to see if your answers are correct.
- Pay attention to the feedback provided by WeBWorK (e.g., correct, incorrect, syntax errors).
Troubleshooting Tips:
- Link not working/page not loading:
- Ensure your browser's pop-up blocker is disabled for Brightspace. WeBWorK often opens in a new window or tab.
- Try using a different web browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox).
- Clear your browser's cache and cookies.
- If you see an error message about "LTI launch failed" or similar, please report this to your instructor.
- Prompted to log in repeatedly:
- This is unusual for a proper LTI integration. Confirm with your instructor if there are specific login procedures for WeBWorK.
- Ensure you are always accessing WeBWorK through the link in Brightspace, not by going directly to a WeBWorK URL.
- Grades not showing in Brightspace:
- Allow some time for grades to synchronize from WeBWorK to Brightspace. Grade synchronization is typically configured by your instructor.
- Your instructor controls which WeBWorK assignments sync to the Brightspace gradebook and how often. If you believe there's an error, contact your instructor.
- WeBWorK problem-solving issues:
- Check your instructor's guidelines or the WeBWorK assignment page for specific syntax rules (e.g., how to enter fractions, exponents, specific functions).
- Many WeBWorK problems allow multiple attempts.
- There is often a "Preview" button to see how WeBWorK interprets your input
Support:
- • Contact your instructor: For questions about course content, assignments, problem syntax, or specific WeBWorK requirements for your class.
