Introduction:
Rubrics are a valuable tool for providing students with clear, consistent, and detailed feedback on their performance. In Brightspace, instructors can also access rubric statistics to gain insights into how students are performing across criteria and to identify trends or areas for improvement.
This step-by-step guide will walk you through how to access and interpret rubric analytics to support more informed teaching and assessment decisions.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Note: To view comprehensive Rubric Statistics, make sure to access the Competency Activities tab within your course's Rubrics Statistics page. From there, you'll be able to explore the Overall, Criteria, and Individual Statistics tabs for detailed insights related to your rubric assessments.
Rubric Statistics vs. Grade Statistics
After using a rubric to assess student work and provide feedback, you may want to explore the data tied to that rubric. Rubric Statistics offer detailed, criterion-level insights, allowing you to see how students performed across specific areas of the rubric. If you're looking for broader, overall performance data—such as averages or distributions for grade items—refer to Grade Statistics instead.
- 1. Log into Brightspace and access your course.
- 2. In the navigation bar, select Activities to view the drop-down menu and click on Rubrics.

- 3. Select a Rubric and scroll to find View Statistics.

- 4. On the Rubrics Statistics page, navigate to the Actions column and select the bar icons to be taken to full statistics viewing.

Accessing Rubric Statistics
- To view statistics for a rubric used in your course, navigate to the Actions column and click the Statistics icon next to the associated evaluation. This will open the Rubric Statistics page, where you can explore three tabs of data: Overall Statistics, Criteria Statistics, and Individual Statistics, each offering insights into student performance and rubric effectiveness.

Overall Statistics:
- •Much of the data in the Overall Statistics tab is also available in the Competency Activities Table. However, this tab provides two additional insights: Mode and Frequency. These metrics help instructors quickly identify trends in student performance across the rubric.
- Mode shows the most commonly achieved performance level for each criterion.
- Frequency displays how often each level was selected, represented as a percentage.

Criteria Statistics:
- • This tab provides detailed data on how students performed for each criterion in the rubric. It shows the percentage of students who achieved each performance level, helping you identify patterns of strengths and areas where students may be struggling.

Individual Statistics:
- • This tab displays a table of individual learners, showing the performance level and score they received for the rubric, along with the name of the assessor and the date the evaluation was completed. It’s useful for reviewing how each student was assessed and ensuring consistency across evaluations. You have the option for both individual or groups.

Troubleshooting Tips:
- • Can't see the Rubric Statistics icon?
- Make sure the rubric has been used for at least one evaluation and is attached to a graded activity (e.g., assignment, discussion). The statistics icon will only appear once the rubric has been applied in student evaluations.
- • It is possible to change which students are presented in the Table by changing what is selected in the drop-down menu next to View By and then clicking the Apply button.
