Instructor Guide: Integrating Packback into Brightspace


What is Packback?

Packback is an AI-powered discussion platform that promotes critical thinking and curiosity-driven learning. Unlike traditional discussion boards, Packback encourages students to ask open-ended questions and engage in thoughtful dialogue. It uses AI to provide real-time feedback on post quality and helps instructors manage discussions more effectively.

How to integrate Packback into Brightspace:

Step 1: Set up your Packback Community

  1. 1. Visit Packback’s Instructor Portal.
  2. 2. Click “Request a Community” and fill out the form with your course details.
  3. 3. A Packback representative will help you set up your community and provide a Community Lookup Key.

Step 2: Add Packback to your Brightspace course

  1. 1. Log in to Brightspace and go to your course.
  2. 2. Navigate to Course Content or the Modules section.
  3. 3. Click “Add Existing Activities” > External Learning Tools.
  4. 4. ​​​​​​​Select Packback from the list (if not listed, contact your LMS admin to enable it).
  5. 5. ​​​​​​​Add the Packback link to your desired module or week.

Step 3: Configure the Link

  1. 1. Click the newly added Packback link.
  2. 2. You’ll be prompted to log in or create a Packback account.
  3. 3. Enter the Community Lookup Key provided by Packback.
  4. 4. ​​​​​​​Your course will now be linked to the Packback community.

Syncing Grades

  1. 1. Ensure your Packback community is set up with LTI 1.3.
  2. 2. Grade sync will occur weekly based on your assignment settings.
  3. 3. ​​​​​​​You can customize grading policies within Packback (e.g., points per question/response, deadlines).

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Your course will now be linked to the Packback community.
  • Grades not syncing? Confirm LTI 1.3 is enabled and the assignment is linked properly.
