Introduction:
By default, students only see their own score after submitting a quiz—if the quiz is set to be automatically graded. However, as an instructor, you can customize the Quiz Submission View to provide additional feedback, such as correct answers, class averages, or even specific question details. This allows you to give learners deeper insight into their performance and, if desired, how it compares to their peers.
In this step-by-step guide, you will learn how to customize your quiz results display(s).
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- 1. Log into Brightspace and access your course.
- From the navigation bar, click on Activities to access the drop-down menu and select Quizzes.

- 2. On the Manage Quizzes tab, either create a new quiz or select a quiz to edit to open the editor.
- 3. From the New Quiz page or the editing page of an existing quiz, click the Evaluation & Feedback section.

Troubleshooting Tips:
- • Students don’t see any results after submitting the quiz
- Check if a submission view is active.
- Solution: Go to the quiz > Submission Views tab. Ensure there’s either a customized view or the default view is set to show desired feedback (grade, questions, etc.).
- • Only grades are shown—no questions or feedback
- Quiz settings may be limited to scores only.
- Solution: In the active submission view, under Show Questions, select:
- “Show all questions with user responses”, or
- “Show questions with correct answers” if applicable; also, verify that “Show attempt score and overall attempt score” is enabled.
- • Students are seeing quiz answers too early
- Submission view timing may be misconfigured.
- Solution: If you only want to release answers after a deadline or all students have submitted:
- Create an additional submission view
- Set a date/time restriction under "View Restrictions."
- Make sure the default view does not show answers before the release
- • Submission view shows up inconsistently
- Multiple submission views may be conflicting.
- Solution: Ensure only one view is active at a time per condition (e.g., after attempt vs. after date). If multiple views are set, Brightspace shows the first matching view.
- • Custom view not saving properly
- Possible page timeout or form error.
- Solution: After making changes:
- Click Save and then Save and Close
- Refresh the page to confirm your settings are in place
- Avoid browser back button while editing
- • Still not seeing expected behavior?
- Clearing your browser cache and rechecking the settings
- Previewing the quiz as a student

FAQ Section:
- • Q1: I want students to only see their score immediately after the quiz—no answers or feedback. What should I do?
- A: Use the Default Submission View and ensure:
- Show attempt score and overall attempt score” is checked
- All question display options are unchecked; this provides a clean results view with just the grade.
- • Q2: I want students to see which questions they got wrong, but not the correct answers.
- A: In your submission, view settings:
- Enable “Show all questions with user responses.”
- Leave “Show question answers” unchecked; this allows review of what they selected without revealing the right answers.
- • Q3: I want to release full quiz feedback only after the quiz closes.
- A: Set up a secondary submission view:
- Add a new view under the Submission Views tab
- Under “View Restrictions,” select a date/time after the quiz deadline
- Include all feedback options (correct answers, scores, class average, etc.)
- Ensure the Default View is limited until this view activates
- • Q4: I want students to see the class average after submission.
- A: In your desired submission view:
- Check the box for “Show class average”
- Optionally, show score distribution (histogram) for more context
- • Q5: I’m allowing multiple attempts—can students see their previous submissions?
- A: Yes, but it depends on your view settings.
- Submission views apply per attempt, so each must be configured if needed
- If you want them to compare attempts, include “Show attempt score” and “Show questions with user responses”
- • Q6: Can I hide results completely until I am ready to release them?
- A: Yes!
- Set the Default View to show no information
- Create a custom view with a future release date/time
- This is great for high-stakes or timed-release assessments
