Introduction:
In Brightspace, instructors have the ability to edit quiz questions and apply regrading after students have already taken the quiz. This is especially useful in scenarios such as:
- • Updating or correcting an answer key
- • Awarding full or zero points to all students for a specific question
Important: To ensure grades are updated properly and no data is lost, follow the steps outlined in this guide. Avoid editing questions directly through the quiz's Edit screen or deleting questions, as these actions can disrupt student attempt records and grading accuracy
Step-by-Step Instructions:
PLEASE NOTE: We do not recommend completing these steps until all students have completed the quiz.
- 1. Log in to Brightspace and access your course.
- On the Navigation Bar, go to Activities and select the Quizzes tab.

- 2. On the Manage Quizzes Dashboard, select the Questions tab.
- On the options, select Update all attempts.

- 3. Next, select a question from the Questions that are not in the quiz anymore.
- Here, you would make the recommended changes to the answers.

- 4. In the Update All Attempts dashboard, you can choose between two Grading Types:
- Give to all attempts - You can select this option to give full credit if you wish not to change the question answer.

-
- Give to attempts with the following answer - if you want to make edits to the answer, then you select this option.

-
- Do not forget to give the same amount of points the question originally was.
- 5. Once changes are made, click Save.
- Confirm again with Yes.
- Then click Go Back to Questions to return to the question options.
- 6. Move on to the next question that needs updates and repeat steps 3-5.

NOTE: If you’ve made an adjustment to a quiz question, that will be noted when you are grading. It will show which students have answered the edited question and which has answered the old version of the question. "Note: This Question is an old version as it was modified after the quiz was taken"

Troubleshooting Tips:
- • Changes aren’t affecting student grades?
- Make sure you are using the “Update All Attempts” feature from the Questions tab in the Grade view of the quiz. Edits made from the Edit Quiz screen will not retroactively apply to submitted attempts.
- • Quiz still shows old answers?
- Refresh the page after saving your changes, or navigate to a different quiz tab and return to the Questions tab. This can help refresh Brightspace's display.
- • Students report seeing two different answers for the same question
- When a quiz question is edited after submission, Brightspace flags attempts based on whether they received the original or edited version. This is expected behavior and helps you track who saw which version.
- • The “Update All Attempts” option is missing?
- Confirm that there is at least one submitted attempt for the quiz. The “Update All Attempts” option only appears after student submissions have been made.
- • Multiple-choice answers from the drop-down options have weird text.
- If you have "fancy text" embedded in the source code of your answers, it may cause confusion from the drop-down options. To fix this, edit your actual quiz. In the toolbar of the answer(s), find the </> button, and follow this example:
-
 Hello World !
can be changed to
Hello World !

FAQ Section:
- • Q: Will students be notified if a question is changed or regraded?
- A: No. Changes are applied silently. If transparency is important, consider posting an announcement or sending a message explaining the change.
- • Q: Can I give full points to everyone for a question?
- A: Yes. In the “Update All Attempts” area, choose the option to Give all students a specific score, then assign full marks to that question.
- • Q: What if I realize a mistake before students finish taking the quiz?
- A: You can edit the quiz normally using the Edit screen. This will apply changes only to future attempts.
- • Q: Can I regrade multiple questions at once?
- A: No, Brightspace requires you to regrade each question individually through the Questions tab in the grading area.
- • Q: Do I need to manually adjust final grades after regrading a quiz?
- A: Not usually. As long as your quiz is linked correctly to the gradebook, updated question scores will automatically reflect in the grade item and final grade calculation.
