Similarity Report & AI Report File Requirements

Introduction:

To ensure a submission is eligible for Turnitin's Similarity Report or AI Writing Detection, the file must meet the following criteria:

Accepted File Types

Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
Corel WordPerfect (.wpd)
HTML (.htm, .html)
Adobe PostScript (.ps)
Plain Text (.txt)
Rich Text Format (.rtf)
Portable Document Format (.pdf) — must contain highlightable text
OpenOffice (.odt)
Hangul (.hwp, .hwpx)
PowerPoint (.pptx)
Google Docs (via Google Drive — not .gdoc files)

Note: PDF image files, scanned documents, forms, portfolios, and files with visual effects (e.g., shadows, 3D text) are not supported.

File Size and Length:

Maximum file size: 100 MB
Maximum length: 800 pages
Minimum text: 20 words

Unsupported File Types:

Apple Pages
Microsoft Works (.wps)
Word 2007 macros-enabled (.docm)
OpenOffice files downloaded from Google Docs
Spreadsheets not created in Microsoft Excel (.ods)

AI Writing Detection Report Requirements

Accepted File Types

Maximum file size: 100 MB
Minimum word count: 300 words (prose format)
Maximum word count: 15,000–30,000 words (depending on institution settings)

Maximum length: 800 pages
Minimum text: 20 words

English
Spanish
Japanese

Important: AI detection is currently most reliable for English prose. Non-prose formats (e.g., poetry, code, lists, tables) may not be accurately analyzed.

Visibility:

The AI Indicator is visible only to instructors within the Similarity Report interface.
Students do not see the AI score unless it is shared by the instructor.

Troubleshooting:

If you see that the AI Writing Report is not generated, this could be because of the following reasons:
- The submission file is an unsupported file type.
- Submission text is in an unsupported language.
- Qualifying text is either fewer than 300 words or more than 30,000 words.

Tips for Successful Submission:

Avoid scanned documents unless OCR (Optical Character Recognition) has been applied.
Verify text is selectable by copying and pasting it into a plain-text editor.
Remove visual effects from PowerPoint slides before submission.
Use supported formats and ensure the document contains sufficient readable text.
