Introduction
In some situations, instructors may need to temporarily remove final grades from student view. This is commonly done when final grade calculations need to be reviewed, adjusted, or corrected before being officially released. Brightspace allows you to retract final grades at any time without deleting grade data.
This article explains how to remove final grades and make them unavailable to students until you are ready to release them again.
Step by Step Instructions
- Log in to Brightspace and access your course.
- In the course homepage, go to Class Progress and Grades

- In Enter Grades, find the Final Grades category.

- In the drop-down menu of Final Calculated Grade, go to Enter Grades

- In the dashboard, select all users and click on the Release/Unrelease button
- This will uncheck/check the release option for grades.

- Save and Close.
- The students will no longer see their final calculated grade in the grade book. (the eyeball icon will be crossed)
Important Notes:
- Retracting final grades does not delete any grade data.
- Students will no longer see their final grade until it is re-released.
- You can retract and re-release final grades as many times as needed.
- Final grades in Brightspace do not transfer automatically to systems like Banner.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Final grade still visible to students: Refresh the page and confirm you selected Retract All, not just unchecked individual students.
-
Can’t retract grades: Verify that you are retracting the same final grade type (Calculated vs Adjusted) that was released.
-
Students report seeing old grades: Ask them to log out and back in, or clear their browser cache.
-
Grades look incorrect after retracting: Review grade calculations before re-releasing final grades.
