Remote Desktop Connection to an On-Campus Computer

In order to create a remote desktop connection to an on-campus computer:

  • Ensure you have a VPN connection to the campus network.
  • Ensure your campus Windows computer is left powered on.
  • You can only remote into a campus computer that you have logged into before - where you already have a user profile.

Connect to Your Campus PC Via Remote Desktop

From a Windows Computer to a Windows Computer

  • At the bottom-left of your Windows screen, search for and launch Remote Desktop Connection.
  • At the resulting window, in the computer field, computer_name.ad.utrgv.edu
    The computer name can be obtained from your campus PC's locked screen.  To lock your computer, press Win + L simultaneously.  If you have trouble connecting, try entering the campus computer's IP address instead of the computer name.
  • If you need to access your local resources such as your printer or clipboard, click to expand Show Options, and then select the Local Resources tab and select the needed local devices. 
  • It is best to initiate calls or join online meetings with your local (off-campus) computer to avoid an audio/video lag.  If you need access to your remote microphone and speakers (from your campus computer), under the Remote audio section click on Settings and select options as applicable.
  • Click Connect, login with UTRGV email address <first.last@utrgv.edu> and password  (note: if on a personal computer you may need to click more choices and use a different account)

From a Mac Computer to a Windows Computer

  • Install  Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 from the Mac app store
  • Open Microsoft Remote Desktop 10
  • Accept all prompts to allow access to microphone etc.
  • Click Add PC
  • under PC Name type, computer_name.ad.utrgv.edu
  • The computer name can be obtained from your campus PC's locked screen.  To lock your computer, press Win + L simultaneously.
  • If you need to access your local resources such as your printer or clipboard, click to expand Devices and Audio, and select the needed local devices. 
  • It is best to initiate calls or join online meetings with your local (off-campus) computer to avoid an audio/video lag.  If you need access to your remote microphone and speakers (from your campus computer), under Devices and Audio Redirect the Microphone.  
  • Click Add
  • Double Click on the newly added computer to connect
  • Login with UTRGV email address <first.last@utrgv.edu>  and password click Continue ( accept any certificate prompts)


Remote Connection to a MAC Computer

Connecting from a Windows or MAC computer (remote) to a MAC computer (on-campus) is not available at this time.
