Introduction:

Before diving into the step-by-step details of using Hypothesis in your Brightspace course, this article aims first to explain what the tool is and why to use it.

What is Hypothesis.is?

Hypothes.is is a social annotation tool you can use inside D2L Brightspace that can allow students to discuss a reading or topic together. Conversations take place in line with the reading or topic, providing further clarity on the context that is being highlighted. Students can share their thoughts and understanding of the reading with their classmates. You can select text to annotate, reply, and share any annotation using links, images, or video.

Why Hypothesis?

Hypothesis lets students take notes, view, and reply to other notes, along with some other features. When you open a Hypothesis assignment, you’ll see the web page or PDF your instructor has assigned alongside the Hypothesis platform.

Considerations Before We Begin

Start by setting some goals, whether you will provide annotations for certain sections and have students respond to your notes, or if students will both annotate their assigned sections and reply to each other's annotations. You will also need to decide if you will organize students into informal or formal groups for the annotation process to help structure the assignment effectively. You will also need to consider the following items:

  • Decide if your text assignment to be annotated will either be a:

o (1) Public accessible webpage
o (2) PDF file in D2L
o (3) PDF on your Google Drive or OneDrive
o (4) JSTOR article.

  • You must create a separate Hypothes.is activity link for each Hypothes.is Assignment. But you can copy them forward each term.
  • You cannot use the same URL or PDF link in the same course for different assignments or Groups, the annotations will show for both assignments.
  • Do not access or have students access Hypothes.is outside of D2L through the web version. Hypothes.is doesn’t recommend this.
