Accessing Macmillan Learning Content

Body

Introduction:

This guide explains how to access and use Macmillan Learning resources (like LaunchPad, Achieve, or Sapling Learning) that your instructor has integrated into your Brightspace course.

What is the Macmillan Learning Integration?

Your instructor may use Macmillan Learning's online tools for assignments, quizzes, e-books, or other activities. The Brightspace integration allows you to access these Macmillan resources directly from within your Brightspace course shell, often streamlining login and potentially allowing grades to sync automatically to your Brightspace grade book.

How to Access Macmillan Content:

  1. 1. Log in to Brightspace and access your course as usual.
  2. 2. Locate the Macmillan Links. Your instructor will place links to Macmillan content within your Brightspace course. These links might be found in content areas or course menus, such as Macmillan, LaunchPad, Sapling, etc. Always access Macmillan content by clicking these links within Brightspace. Do not go directly to the Macmillan website to log in, as this may prevent your accounts from linking correctly and grades from syncing.
  3. 3. Click on the first link provided by your instructor (e.g., a "LaunchPad Homepage" link or a specific assignment link).
  4. 4. Link Your Accounts & Register/Sign In (First Time Only):
  • The first time you click a Macmillan link from Brightspace, you will likely be prompted to connect your Brightspace account with a Macmillan Learning account.
  • If you already have a Macmillan account (from a previous course or direct purchase): Use your existing Macmillan email address and password to sign in.
  • If you are new to Macmillan: You will need to create a new account. Follow the on-screen prompts. Use your student email address if possible.
  • You may need to agree to Terms of Use or Privacy Policies.
  1. 5. Register Your Access / Purchase Access:
  • After signing in or creating your Macmillan account, you will usually be prompted for access to the specific course materials. You typically have a few options (the exact options depend on the specific Macmillan product and your instructor's setup):
    • Enter an Access Code: If you purchased a textbook package that included an access code, enter it here.
    • Purchase Access Online: You can usually buy access directly through Macmillan using a credit card or PayPal.
    • Request Temporary Access: Many Macmillan products offer a free trial period (e.g., 14 or 21 days) so you can get started immediately while arranging full access. Remember to gain full access before the trial expires to avoid losing access to your work.
  1. 6. Access Content: Once you have successfully linked your accounts and registered/purchased access, clicking on any Macmillan link within your Brightspace course should take you directly to the corresponding resource or assignment in the Macmillan platform without needing to log in separately again.

Important Considerations:

  • Use Brightspace Links: ALWAYS access your Macmillan assignments and resources through the links provided in your Brightspace course. Bookmarking the Macmillan site or logging in directly will likely cause issues with grade synchronization.
  • Grade Sync: In many cases, grades for your Macmillan assignments will automatically transfer to your Brightspace gradebook. However, this depends on how your instructor set up the course.
    • There might be a delay between completing work in Macmillan and seeing the grade in Brightspace.
    • If you have questions about whether grades sync or when, please ask your instructor.
  • Pop-up Blockers: Macmillan often uses pop-up windows. Ensure your browser's pop-up blocker is disabled for the Macmillan site (macmillanlearning.com, macmillanhighered.com, bfwpub.com, saplinglearning.com, etc.) or allow pop-ups when prompted.
  • Browser Compatibility: Use a recommended browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for the best experience with both Brightspace and Macmillan.
