Summary
This guide explains how instructors can adjust the number of students displayed per page in the Enter Grades view. It includes steps for increasing the page size, tips for collapsing or hiding grade items, and troubleshooting common display limits caused by too many visible columns.
Body
Introduction:
If your course includes many grade items or columns, Brightspace may limit how many students can be displayed at once due to system constraints. In that case, you can hide certain grade items or categories to reduce the number of visible columns, which may allow you to view more students per page.
This step-by-step guide will show you how to adjust these settings to better manage your grading view.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Note: By default, the Enter Grades view in Brightspace displays 10-20 students per page. If you'd like to see more students at once, you can adjust the page size to show up to 100-200 students per page using the setting at the bottom of the page.
Select to see up to 200 students per page in Enter Grades
- 1. Log into Brightspace and access your course.
- [a] On the navigation bar, click on Class Progress to view the drop-down menu, and select Grades.
- [b] On the dashboard, stay on the Enter Grades tab.

- 2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and near the left select the 20 per page drop-down and select to show 50, 100, or 200 per page.

- 3. If you don't have the option to select more per page, there are likely many grade items/categories or "columns" showing on the page. Collapse or hide columns to be able to show more per page (see next tile).
Collapse or Hide Grade Item/Category Columns to be able to show more per page
Brightspace has a limit to how many grade items and categories (Grade Objects) it can display at once in the Enter Grades view. If your course includes many visible columns, this may prevent you from increasing the number of students shown per page. To work around this, you can either collapse grade categories or hide specific grade items or categories to free up space, allowing more students to appear on a single page.
There are two ways to show/hide your categories.
If you finished viewing a category, you can minimize it using the [+] and [-] signs next to the category title
- 1. When [+] is selected, it expands all the items in the category.

- 2. When [-] is selected, it collapses the whole category.

- If you wish to view a specific category or items outside of a category...
- 1. Locate More Actions and click to view the drop-down menu.
- Select Hide/Show Columns.

- 2. Check Grade Items twice to deselect all items.
- 3. Check the categories you wish to view only.

- 4. After saving, the column you selected will only appear.

- 5. And at the top, Brightspace will remind you with a message:
- Note: Some grade items/categories are not displayed, click More Actions - Hide/Show Columns to change which items are visible.
- 6. Once you've hidden some columns, try selecting to see more students per page.
Troubleshooting Tips:
- •Changes Not Saving?
- Sometimes column visibility settings don’t stick right away. Try This:
- After adjusting column visibility, refresh the page or navigate away and return to Enter Grades to apply the change.
- Double-check you're in the correct course section if working with merged courses.
- •View Still Feels Crowded?
- Even with fewer visible students, the layout may be overwhelming. Try This:
- Use filters (e.g., groups, sections, or grade category filters) to narrow down what’s displayed.
- Export the gradebook to Excel for easier viewing or analysis if needed.
