Introduction:
The Perusall Integration in Brightspace allows instructors to create and link to a Perusall course, link to specific assignments in Perusall, and pass grades from Perusall to the Brightspace gradebook. Perusall is a social reading, annotation, and online discussion tool. While an integration exists in Brightspace, Perusall is not a supported service.
Note: Perusall is free to use; however, students may incur a cost if instructors designate textbooks to be purchased through Perusall.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- 1. Log into Brightspace.
- 2. Go to the content area where you want to add the tool link.
- 3. Select “Add Existing”.
- 4. Click “External Tool Activity”.
- 5. Select “Perusall” from the list of External Learning Tools.
- 6. Launch Perusall and create your D2L-Perusall integrated course. Perusall will automatically sync your Perusall course roster with the D2L roster.
Important: By default, when you create an assignment in Perusall, it will automatically make a corresponding grade item for each Perusall assignment in your Brightspace course gradebook that will sync based on your Perusall course settings, so you will not need to make more Perusall links in your D2L course. Troubleshooting:
- • Why does my LMS course have duplicate grade items?
Duplicates in the LMS generally occur when a course is set to auto-create mode, and the instructor is also manually adding deep links. To remove the duplicates, navigate to Settings > Scoring > LMS grade sync > LMS gradebook column management, and switch Instructor creates deep links. When you do, you'll see a pop-up says "Also delete existing gradebook columns in my LMS that Perusall is currently syncing to." Enable this, and Save Changes. Perusall will delete the duplicate columns that we have automatically created, and then when you launch the deep links from your LMS course, the grades will appear in the LMS gradebook columns you've created.
- • Perusall can't find my deep links in the LMS
After you've created deep links in your LMS course, the final step is to open the link, taking you from your LMS course to Perusall. (Anyone in the LMS course can do this, students or instructors.) If you've already opened the link, and the scores are still not syncing, try creating a brand new assignment in your LMS course, and adding the deep link, there. Then, the scores from Perusall should sync to the new assignment in the LMS. You are safe to delete the non-functioning link.
