Summary
This article explains how to update quiz points, regrade affected attempts, and ensure the Gradebook reflects the correct total.
Body
Introduction:
Instructors may occasionally need to adjust quiz grades after students have completed the quiz — for example, when updating question values or correcting total points. Brightspace allows you to modify quiz point values and re-sync grades to the Gradebook without deleting student attempts.
This article explains how to update quiz points, regrade affected attempts, and ensure the Gradebook reflects the correct total.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- 1. Access the Quiz Tool
- From your course navigation bar, go to Activities , then Quizzes.

-
- Locate the quiz that needs regrading, then click the drop-down arrow next to its title.
-

- 2. Retract Existing Feedback
- On the grading page, check the box beside Select All to choose all attempts.
- Click Retract Feedback.

-
- This temporarily removes quiz scores from the Gradebook so they can be recalculated correctly.
- 3. Adjust the Maximum Points in the Gradebook
- Navigate to Class Progress and Grades from your course navbar.
-
- Click Manage Grades, then locate the Grade Item associated with your quiz.

-
- Select the drop-down arrow then Edit Grade Item.

-
- Update the Maximum Points field to reflect the new quiz total.

-
- When prompted, click Yes to confirm the recalculation.
Tip: If the “Maximum Points” field is locked, your quiz may be part of a category that distributes points evenly.
> Edit the Category and temporarily disable Distribute points/weight evenly across all items.
> After saving your changes, re-enable this option if desired.
- 4. Re-Publish Updated Grades to the Gradebook
- Return to Activities >> Quizzes and the [Quiz Name].

-
- Select Grade again, and check Select All Attempts.
-
- Click Publish to push the corrected grades back to the Gradebook.

- 5. The updated quiz points will now appear in the Gradebook with the correct totals.
Troubleshooting Tips:
- •Students’ scores didn’t change:
- Double-check that you retracted feedback before editing the quiz’s grade item. Grades won’t update if feedback is still published.
- • Can’t edit the grade item:
- Verify you have full editing permissions or that the grade item isn’t linked to a locked category.
- • Grade totals appear off:
- Review the quiz questions in the Edit Quiz view — ensure point values for individual questions match your desired total.
- • Some students’ grades didn’t re-sync:
- Use the Recalculate All option under Grade > Enter Grades > Final Calculated Grade to ensure all values align.
- • Need to adjust question-level scoring instead?
- Use Activities >> Quizzes >> Grade >> Questions tab >> Update All Attempts to regrade specific questions.

- • Q: Will changing quiz points affect past attempts?
- A: Yes. Once grades are retracted and re-published, the new point total applies to all attempts.
- • Q: Do I need to manually regrade each student?
- A: No. Brightspace automatically recalculates all quiz attempts when points or totals are adjusted.
- • Q: Can I change question values after students have taken the quiz?
- A: Yes, but use the Questions tab and Update All Attempts method to adjust points fairly for all students.
- • Q: Will this process affect other quizzes or categories?
- A: No, only the selected quiz and its linked Grade Item will be affected.
- • Q: Do students see retracted feedback?
- A: No. Feedback is hidden until you republish grades, ensuring students only see the corrected version.
