Body
Introduction:
If you’ve already published quiz grades but later need to adjust the total points or redistribute scores, e.g., change the overall quiz grade from 20 points to 100 points. You can regrade the quiz without deleting student attempts. This process involves retracting current grades, updating the grade item’s point value, and republishing the corrected scores.
Example:
A student who earned 8/10 on the original quiz will show 16/20 in the Gradebook.
(8 × (20 ÷ 10) = 16, and 8/10 = 16/20)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Important:
- If you change the maximum points in Grades before retracting feedback, the grade calculations may not align.
- To fix this, repeat the Retract Feedback and Publish steps so that both the quiz and Gradebook are resynced.
- The quiz score and Gradebook total may not match exactly in raw points, but their percentages will always align.
- To make both the points and percentages match perfectly, use the Update All Attempts option for every question that was adjusted.
Step 2: Change the Maximum Points in the Gradebook
- 1. Go to Grades from your course navigation bar.
- 2. Locate the Grade Item associated with your quiz and click the drop-down arrow › Edit Grade Item.

- 3. Change the Maximum Points field to your new total (e.g., 20).

- 4. Confirm the update by clicking Yes when prompted.
- If the field is locked:
- Save, update the quiz grade item, and re-enable the option when finished
- Temporarily disable Distribute points/weight evenly across all items.
- Edit the category containing your quiz.
Step 3: Republish the Updated Grades
- 1. Return to Activities › Quizzes.
- 2. Click the drop-down arrow › Grade next to your quiz.
- 3. Select All Attempts again.
- 4. Click Publish to push the corrected grades back into the Gradebook.
- Your students will now see the updated point total reflected accurately in the Gradebook.

Troubleshooting Tips:
- • Grades not updating: Ensure you retracted feedback before editing the grade item.
- • Locked grade item: Temporarily uncheck Distribute evenly under the category settings.
- • Percentages don’t match: Review question points or use “Update All Attempts” to regrade.
- • Student total missing: Verify that all attempts were selected before publishing.
- • Still not syncing? Check if the quiz is linked to the correct grade item.

FAQ Section:
- • Q: Will changing the maximum points affect students’ grades?
- A: No. The student’s percentage score will remain the same. For example, if a student earned 8/10 originally, after updating the quiz to 20 points, their grade will appear as 16/20.
- • Q: Why don’t the points in my quiz match the points in my Gradebook?
- A: This is expected behavior. The quiz tool records the original total (e.g., 10 points), while the Gradebook reflects the new adjusted total (e.g., 20 points). Percentages remain consistent between both.
- • Q: I changed the points, but grades didn’t update. What happened?
- A: You must retract feedback from the quiz before editing the Gradebook. If you change the grade item first, Brightspace won’t recalculate until you retract and republish feedback.
- • Q: Can I edit the point value if my quiz is part of a weighted category?
- A: Yes, but you may need to temporarily disable “Distribute points/weight evenly across all items” in the category settings before changing the points. Re-enable it afterward to maintain consistency.
- • Q: What if I want both points and percentages to match exactly between the quiz and Gradebook?
- A: You’ll need to edit each question’s point value and use the Update All Attempts option in the quiz. This updates the quiz total itself, ensuring both the quiz and Gradebook match perfectly.
- • Q: Do I need to delete student attempts to fix incorrect totals?
- A: No. Never delete attempts unless absolutely necessary. Retracting feedback and republishing will resync all attempts with the corrected total.
- • Q: Can students see that I changed the total points?
- A: Students will only see their updated grade and percentage in the Gradebook. Brightspace does not notify them automatically of point value changes.
