Introduction
Accurate captions are required to ensure accessibility compliance and equivalent access for all learners. Auto-generated captions often contain errors. Always review for:
- Discipline-specific terminology
- Proper punctuation
- Speaker clarity
- Complete sentences
If essential visual information appears in the video but is not spoken aloud, ensure it is narrated or otherwise described.
Step by Step Instructions
Follow the steps below to review and edit captions in the Brightspace Media Library. You must be the owner of the media to edit captions.
- Access your Brightspace course.
- From the course navigation bar, select Tools.
- Click Media Library.
- Locate your video in the Media Library list.
- Select the Actions icon (three dots) to the right of the video title.

- Choose Edit.
- In the editing panel, select the Closed Captions tab on the right side.

- Within the Closed Captions editor:
- Modify Text: Click directly inside any caption text block to edit wording, spelling, punctuation, or terminology.
- Delete a Caption Block: Select the trash can icon next to the block you want to remove.
- Add a New Caption Block: Use + New captions text… field box to insert new caption text where needed to ensure completeness and clarity.
- Saving Your Changes
- Select Save Draft if you are not finished editing.
- Select Finish to publish the updated captions.
Note: Providing accurate captions supports accessibility compliance and improves clarity for all students.
