Use these instructions to install or reinstall the Microsoft Authenticator app, including when you get a new phone, reset your phone, or remove and reinstall the app for any reason.
Before You Reinstall
Before removing the Microsoft Authenticator app from your old device:
- Go to the Microsoft My Sign‑Ins page.
- Select Security info.
- Confirm that Phone is listed as an authentication method.
- If it is not listed, select + Add method → Phone, then follow the prompts.
- If the phone number is incorrect, select Change next to Phone and update it.
Note: A phone number is required to set up Microsoft Authenticator on a new device.
If your old device is still listed under Microsoft Authenticator, select Delete next to the old device.

Install or Reinstall the Microsoft Authenticator App
Step 1: Install the App on Your Mobile Device
- Open your device’s app store and install the Microsoft Authenticator app
- When prompted, allow camera access and notifications.
Step 2: Start Setup on a Computer
- On a PC or Mac, go to the Microsoft My Sign‑Ins page.
- Select Security info.
- Select + Add method.
- Choose Authenticator app, then select Add.

- On your computer, select Next when prompted.

Step 3: Add Your UTRGV Account in the App
On your mobile device:
- Open the Authenticator app.
- Tap the plus (+) icon or the menu (three dots).
- Select Add account.
- Choose Work or school account.
- Select Scan a QR code.
- Use your device to scan the QR code shown on the computer screen.
If your phone’s camera is not working or you cannot scan the QR code:
- On the computer screen, select Can’t scan image.
- A code and URL will be displayed.
- In the Microsoft Authenticator app, tap Or enter code manually.
- Enter the code and URL, then select Finish.
Verify Your Authentication Methods
After setup, return to the My Sign‑Ins page and confirm your authentication methods are correct.
Microsoft Authenticator
- Receives push notifications for approval
- Generates a one‑time verification code every 30 seconds (even without service)
Note: To accept a push notification, tap the notification sent to your device, tap Approve, and enter the number displayed on the sign‑in screen.

Other Authentication Method
- Phone - Allows you to receive a phone call or SMS code. (Required for setting up a new device)
- Alternate Phone - Allows you to receive a phone call.
- Email - Non‑UTRGV email used for password resets only.
- Office Phone - Allows you to receive a phone call.
Set Your Default Sign‑In Method (Recommended)
- On the My Sign‑Ins page, locate Default sign‑in method.
- Select Change.
- Choose Microsoft Authenticator – notification.
- Select Confirm.
Recommendation: Microsoft Authenticator notifications are the most secure and convenient option.

Additional Help
If you changed your phone number and do not have Microsoft Authenticator set up, your MFA methods must be manually reset by the IT Service Desk. Identification verification is required.
IMPORTANT:
DO NOT APPROVE AUTHENTICATOR NOTIFICATIONS THAT YOU DID NOT REQUEST. DO NOT PROVIDE AN MFA CODE TO ANYONE. HACKERS MAY ASK FOR A CODE VIA TEXT, PHONE, OR EMAIL - DO NOT PROVIDE IT. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY STAFF WILL NEVER ASK YOU FOR A CODE.
