This guide explains how to adjust course availability dates for all students in your course. If you need to grant access to specific students after the course has officially closed, please submit a
support ticket for assistance.
Introduction:
Courses in Brightspace are set to automatically become available to students on the official start date and close on the official end date. However, you may want to open your course early to give students a head start or keep it open longer to allow extra time for review or late submissions.
Brightspace gives instructors the flexibility to adjust course availability dates so you can control exactly when students in your course gain access to content. Whether you are finalizing materials, accommodating unique schedules, or simply want to give your class more time, modifying course start and end dates can help you create a more effective and student-friendly experience.
This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to change course availability settings in Brightspace.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- 1. Navigate to the course in which you would like to change the availability or opening dates.
-
- 2. Click on the Course Admin link in the Navigation Bar.

-
- 3. Click on the Course Offering Information link.

-
-
- 4. To change the Course Availability, navigate down to the "Active" section.
- To make the course unavailable, uncheck the "Course is active" check box.
-
-
- 5. To change the dates students have access to the course, navigate down to the Start and End Dates section.

-
- Click check boxes for start and/or end dates, and then enter the dates you'd like for students to access the course.
- Students will see a tile for active courses they are enrolled in on their home page. However, they will not be able to access these courses until they are officially opened.
-

Note: If a Start Date and an End Date are established but the instructor fails to mark the course as active, the course will not be accessible to learners on the designated start date. To make the course available, the instructor must select the option "Course is active" as outlined in Step 4.
