Introduction:
Managing enrollments at scale can be a time-consuming task, especially when working with multiple courses, sections, or users. Fortunately, Brightspace offers a bulk enrollment feature that allows Organization Leaders to quickly and efficiently enroll large numbers of users into courses using a simple file upload process.
This step-by-step guide will help you manage your bulk enrollments in Brightspace at the organization level.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Note: You must be an Organization Leader with the appropriate Classlist permissions enabled to complete these steps.
- 1. Log into Brightspace and access your organization.
- [a] Select Tools to access the drop-down menu.
- [b] Click on Classlist.

- 2. In the Classlist dashboard, [a] select Add Participants and [b] click on Import Users from a file on your computer.
-

- 3. Excel Format is as follows—
-
-
File Format: Text Files (.txt or .csv)
Org Defined ID, *First Name, *Last Name, Email, *Role, Change Password
*Denotes a required field. Optional fields can be blank without affecting the import
- Open Excel and fill in the options as so:
- NOTE: Change Password = true/false; mark as false.
- NOTE: Org Defined ID = Course Offering Code

-
- Once finished, click on [a] File

-
- Select [b] Save a copy
- On the [c] drop-down for file type, select a .csv or .txt file

- 4. Back in Brightspace on the import section, find Choose File to upload your formatted Excel sheet, and then select the Import button below

Troubleshooting Tips:
- • File Format Issues
- Ensure your file is saved as .csv or .txt (UTF-8 encoded is recommended).
- Remove any extra columns or unsupported characters.
- Verify that each entry uses the correct role title (e.g., Student, not Students).
- • Users Not Enrolling Correctly?
- Double-check for typos in names or emails.
- Ensure the role name matches exactly with what’s available in Brightspace (case-sensitive).
- Confirm that the user is already created in the system—bulk enrollment will not create new accounts.
- Make sure the Org Unit ID is correct for the target course or shell.
