GlobalProtect Always On - Virtual Private Network (VPN) for UTRGV Windows Devices

GlobalProtect Always On automatically establishes a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection, allowing access to UTRGV network resources when working off campus. This application is pre-installed on all university-owned Windows laptops and desktops.

 

Before Taking a Device Off Campus

Before using a university computer off campus:

  • Connect the device to the UTRGV network (wired or Wi-Fi) while on campus
  • Log in to the computer to establish a profile

This ensures the device is properly configured for off-campus access.

 

How GlobalProtect Works

When the device is powered on and connected to the internet, GlobalProtect should automatically attempt to connect.

You may be prompted to log in using your UTRGV credentials:

  • Enter your UTRGV email address
  • Enter your password

Once connected, the GlobalProtect status will display as Connected.

Important Requirements: The computer must first be connected to a network before GlobalProtect can connect.

 

Manually Connecting to GlobalProtect

If needed, you can verify or initiate the connection:

  1. Select the GlobalProtect icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner of the screen).
    Note: If the icon is not visible, select the arrow to expand the system tray and locate the GlobalProtect icon.

  2. Check the connection status
     
  3. If prompted for a portal address, enter: connect.utrgv.edu
     
  4. Sign in using your UTRGV email address and password
    GlobalProtect prompting for login credentials.

After signing in, a confirmation message will indicate that GlobalProtect is connected.

 

On-Campus vs Off-Campus Behavior

  • Off campus: GlobalProtect connects automatically to provide secure access
    GlobalProtect application showing Connected status and external gateway.
     
  • On campus: A message will display indicating you are on the internal network (VPN connection is not used when on campus)

If GlobalProtect Is Missing

If GlobalProtect does not appear to be installed on your university Windows device, it can be installed through the Software Center or Company Portal application. Open the application, locate GlobalProtect, and select Install.
