Windows 11 Upgrade – Microsoft End of Support for Windows 10

Summary

Upgrade now to Windows 11 to keep your computer compliant

Body

Microsoft will soon end support for Windows 10. UTRGV-managed computers running Windows 10 will be non-compliant with security updates and vulnerable to security threats.

Phased deployed updates

Starting October 18th, upgrades will be deployed in phases across campus. Prepare your device in advance to avoid any disruptions.

Voluntary Self-Service Update

We recommend you use the Windows 11, version 23H2 x64 upgrade available through the Software Center under Updates. You can begin the installation process at any time. Once the upgrade has been completed when prompted, please save your work and restart the machine.

Research and Dedicated Equipment Computers

Computers allocated for research and dedicated equipment also need to be upgraded. To help upgrade these computers, submit a service request to schedule an appointment with a technician to avoid service interruptions. Be sure to include your date and time availability.

 Planning for the Upgrade

The Windows 11 upgrade will take several hours to complete, depending on the age of the computer, so please plan accordingly.

Please note the following:

  1. Files and Applications stored on the computer are not affected by the upgrade.
  2.  OneDrive is configured to backup essential files on managed PCs.
  3. Laptop computer users can perform the voluntary upgrade preferably on campus using a wired connection or if off campus ensure you are using global protect and high-speed Internet access.

Need to delay your upgrade for research or compatibility reasons? Please submit an exemption request for review.

Non-compatible machines:

Note: If your computer is running Windows 10 and you don't see the option to upgrade, it may be too old (usually older than 2017) and may be eligible for the Lifecycle Computer Replacement (LCR) Program. Click here for more info on LCR program.

Windows 10 Computers that are not compatible for LCR or with upgrading or exempting must be sent to surplus and, if needed, replaced using the owning department's budget.
