GlobalProtect Always On VPN for Off-Campus UTRGV macOS Devices

GlobalProtect Always On automatically establishes a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection, allowing access to UTRGV network resources when working off campus. GlobalProtect is pre-installed on all university-managed macOS devices.

Before Taking a Device Off Campus

Before using a university-owned Mac off campus:

  • Connect the device to the UTRGV network
  • Log in to the computer to establish a profile

How GlobalProtect Works

When the device is powered on and connected to the internet, GlobalProtect should automatically attempt to connect.

You may be prompted to log in using your UTRGV credentials:

  • Enter your UTRGV email address
  • Enter your password

Once connected, the GlobalProtect status will display as Connected.

Important Requirements: The computer must first be connected to a network before GlobalProtect can establish a VPN connection.

Manually Connect to GlobalProtect

If the VPN does not connect automatically:

  1. Select the GlobalProtect icon in the menu bar (top-right corner of the screen)
  2. Review the connection status
  3. If prompted for a portal address, enter connect.utrgv.edu
  4. Sign in with your UTRGV email address and password

A confirmation message will appear once the connection is established.

On-Campus vs Off-Campus Behavior

  • Off campus: GlobalProtect connects automatically to provide secure access to UTRGV resources
  • On campus: The VPN is not used because you are already on the UTRGV network. You may see a message indicating you are on the internal network. In some cases, GlobalProtect may display a connection error while on campus. This is expected behavior.

If GlobalProtect Is Missing

If GlobalProtect is not installed on a university-owned Mac, it can be installed through the Self Service application. Open the application, locate GlobalProtect, and select Install.
