Log into the Virtual Lab (vLab)

Instructions to log into the Virtual Lab

  1. If off-campus, connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN).  You must be on the campus network or connected to the campus VPN to access the Virtual Lab site.
  2. Connect to the Virtual Lab by opening the VMWare Horizon Client application or accessing the HTML version.
  3. Select virtuallab.utrgv.edu, then enter your credentials.
  4. Select one of three Full Desktop Virtual Machines. Each student will have access only to the virtual machines that are relevant to their classes.
NOTE: You may only have access to one of the virtual machines.

Navigating the Virtual Lab

A Full Desktop Virtual Machine (VM) is a virtual computing environment that operates as an isolated system with its own CPU, memory, and storage. Essentially, it mimics a physical Windows computer. When you initially log into a virtual machine, you will encounter the "Windows is setting up your account" screen. After that, you will have your own isolated session on a Windows computer and access to all the software on the VM you have selected.

NOTE: It is recommended to sign in to OneDrive and save your files there to prevent data loss.

Virtual Machine Information

There are three distinct types of virtual machines. The General VM is ideal for general coursework and light computing tasks, offering sufficient resources for word processing, internet browsing, and basic software applications. The Designer VM suits more demanding projects, including 3D modeling, video editing, animation, and graphic design. Lastly, the Engineering VM is designed for programming, data analysis, and running more complex software. Please visit the Software List article for more information.

Students will have access to virtual machines specific to their classes, providing the necessary tools for their studies. If a student needs access to a different type of VM for a specific project, they should contact the university’s IT support team. The request should include details about the specific project, the type of VM needed, the class name and instructor, and why the current VM does not meet their requirements. The IT team will review the request and, if deemed necessary, grant access to the appropriate VM.
