This article explains the requirements and process for requesting changes to your UTRGV email address or display name after updating your legal name through the appropriate office.

Updating Your Legal Name
Changes to your name must first be updated officially through the appropriate office:
If you are both a student and an employee, your name must be updated with both the Registrar’s Office and Human Resources.
Email Address and Display Name Changes
- Users may request an update to the first name on their email to reflect the name they are commonly known by (for example, a preferred name or middle name)
- The last name in a user’s email address must match the official record on file
Submit an IT Service Request to update your email address and display name.
When an email address change is requested, the display name will also be updated as needed to ensure both reflect the requested or official name consistently.
Important Note: Email address changes will result in a temporary gap in access to UTRGV resources, including email, PeopleSoft, Brightspace, ASSIST, the myUTRGV portal, and other university systems. Access to these resources may be unavailable for 1–3 business days after the change is processed. It is recommended that current students wait until a semester break to request email address changes.
Display Name Changes Only (Not Email Address)
- Users may request an update to the first name on their display name to reflect the name they are commonly known by (for example, a preferred name or middle name)
- The last name in a user’s display name must match the official record on file
- This update changes how the user’s name appears in Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook and Microsoft Teams
Submit a Service Request to request a display name change.
Important Note: Display name updates typically take up to 72 hours to reflect after the change is processed and do not impact access to university resources.
