Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection and Remote Desktop

Access: 

  • Current students should have access to VPN. Students that are unable to log into the Forticlient VPN application (see instructions below) must submit a Service Request to request VPN access. 
  • Current employees have VPN access.

 

Install and Configure FortiClient VPN

University-Owned Computers

FortiClient VPN application is available for university computers from the Software Center(PC) or Self Service(Mac) application.


Personal Computers

  1. Log in to my.utrgv.edu.
  2. From the menu, click Help & Downloads.
  3. Click VPN.
  4. Select your operating system, then click to download and install software. NOTE: If a previous version of FortiClient VPN is already installed on the computer, it will need to be uninstalled prior to installing the new version.
  5. Launch the FortiClient application.
  6. The Connection Settings should be pre-populated during the install process. NOTE: Username and Password will need to be entered.  If you are using a Chromebook or mobile device, you will have to manually configure the connection.
  • Connection Name: UTRGV
  • Description: UTRGV
  • Connection Type:  SSL
  • Remote Gateway: vpn.utrgv.edu
  • Select Customize Port: 443 (ensure the associated checkbox for Port 443 is checked)
  • User Name: Your full UTRGV email address (i.e., myusername@utrgv.edu)
  • If you are using a Chromebook or other mobile device, ensure that the app has permission to storage.
  1. Click Connect.

Log In To VPN (via the Fortilcient application)

Before you can log in to protected UTRGV resources, you MUST establish a VPN connection using the VPN client (FortiClient) installed on your computer.

  1. Open the VPN client application (FortiClient).
  2. Enter your credentials, then select Connect.  
  3. Complete the Multifactor Authentication (MFA) prompts.  Tap Approve on the Microsoft Authenticator app, otherwise sign in using your default sign-in method (call, code/token via text message, Authenticator app, etc) NOTE:  Forticlient will only use your default sign-in method.
  4. You are now connected to VPN and may access UTRGV resources such as Virtual Labs, Banner, Peoplesoft, and other protected resources.

Students that are unable to log into the Forticlient VPN application must submit a Service Request to request VPN access. 



Remote Desktop Service for UTRGV Employees (to connect to your UTRGV computer from off campus)

  • Ensure your campus Windows computer is left powered on and locked (to lock your computer, press Win + L simultaneously).
  • You can only remote into a campus computer that you have logged into before - where you already have a user profile.

Connect to Your Campus PC Via Remote Desktop

From a Windows Computer to a Windows Computer

  • At the bottom-left of your screen, search for and launch Remote Desktop Connection.
  • At the resulting window, in the computer field, computer_name.ad.utrgv.edu
    The computer name can be obtained from your campus PC's locked screen.  To lock your computer, press Win + L simultaneously.  If you have trouble connecting, try entering the campus computer's IP address instead of the computer name.
  • If you need to access your local resources such as your printer or clipboard, click to expand Show Options, and then select the Local Resources tab and select the needed local devices. 
  • It is best to initiate calls or join online meetings with your local (off-campus) computer to avoid an audio/video lag.  If you need access to your remote microphone and speakers (from your campus computer), under the Remote audio section click on Settings and select options as applicable.
  • Click Connect, login with UTRGV email address <first.last@utrgv.edu> and password  (note: if on a personal computer you may need to click more choices and use a different account)

From a Mac Computer to a Windows Computer

  • Install  Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 from the Mac app store
  • Open Microsoft Remote Desktop 10
  • Accept all prompts to allow access to microphone etc.
  • Click Add PC
  • under PC Name type, computer_name.ad.utrgv.edu
  • The computer name can be obtained from your campus PC's locked screen.  To lock your computer, press Win + L simultaneously.
  • If you need to access your local resources such as your printer or clipboard, click to expand Devices and Audio, and select the needed local devices. 
  • It is best to initiate calls or join online meetings with your local (off-campus) computer to avoid an audio/video lag.  If you need access to your remote microphone and speakers (from your campus computer), under Devices and Audio Redirect the Microphone.  
  • Click Add
  • Double Click on the newly added computer to connect
  • Login with UTRGV email address <first.last@utrgv.edu>  and password click Continue ( accept any certificate prompts)


VPN and Remote Desktop Connection with an iPad/iPhone (iOS)


Remote Connection to a MAC Computer

Connecting from a Windows or MAC computer (remote) to a MAC computer (on-campus) is not available at this time.
