Create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection

To create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection:

DUO Mobile Enrollment (Required)

  1. Enroll for DUO Mobile two-factor authentication and install the DUO Mobile App.. This is used to confirm authentication to UTRGV resources.
  2. Install the FortiClient software on your computer. FortiClient establishes a secure VPN connection to the UTRGV network.

Install and Configure FortiClient VPN

FortiClient VPN is available for university laptops from the Software Center application.

  1. Log in to
  2. From the menu, click Help & Downloads.
  3. Click VPN.
  4. Select your operating system, then click to download and install software. NOTE: If a previous version of FortiClient VPN is already installed on the computer, it will need to be uninstalled prior to installing the new version.
  5. Launch the FortiClient application.
  6. The Connection Settings should be pre-populated during the install process. NOTE: Username and Password will need to be entered.
  • Connection Name: UTRGV
  • Description: UTRGV
  • Remote Gateway:
  • Select Customize Port: 443
  • User Name: Your full UTRGV email address (i.e.,
  • Password: Your UTRGV password
  1. Click Connect.

Two-Factor Authentication

Before you can log in to UTRGV resources, you MUST establish a VPN connection using the VPN client (FortiClient) installed on your computer.

  1. Open the VPN client (FortiClient).
  2. Enter your credentials, then click Connect.

 NOTE: If you chose DUO Push with DUO Mobile APP, you will receive a DUO Mobile notification on your smartphone.

  1. Tap Approve on the DUO Mobile App

NOTE: If you do not receive the DUO Mobile notifications, manually launch the app on your device and try again. If you set up your device using a landline (not the DUO app), you will receive a call from 956-665-2020. Answer the call and press any number on the dial pad to approve.

  1. You are now connected to VPN and may access UTRGV resources such as Banner or Peoplesoft.

Remote Desktop Service

Remote Desktop Service MUST be enabled on your computer before you can access your campus computer from outside the UTRGV campus network.

To request Remote Desktop service (RDP), submit a service request. Be sure to include the Asset Tag number of the computer.

NOTE: IF you travel outside the U.S., request to have your computer accept connections from international locations.
