Create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection

Whenever possible, it's recommended to save files to your OneDrive or to a departmental SharePoint site for access from off-campus.

Students that need VPN access must have a DUO Mobile account created. The instructor should submit a Service Request to request the configuration.  All student email addresses that need access should be included in the request.

VPN access is only available to current employees and those whose accounts have been manually configured for access.

To create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection:

DUO Mobile Enrollment (Required)

  1. Enroll for DUO Mobile two-factor authentication and install the DUO Mobile App.. This is used to confirm authentication to UTRGV resources.
  2. Install the FortiClient software on your computer. FortiClient establishes a secure VPN connection to the UTRGV network.

Install and Configure FortiClient VPN

FortiClient VPN is available for university laptops from the Software Center application.

  1. Log in to my.utrgv.edu.
  2. From the menu, click Help & Downloads.
  3. Click VPN.
  4. Select your operating system, then click to download and install software. NOTE: If a previous version of FortiClient VPN is already installed on the computer, it will need to be uninstalled prior to installing the new version.
  5. Launch the FortiClient application.
  6. The Connection Settings should be pre-populated during the install process. NOTE: Username and Password will need to be entered.  If you are using a Chromebook or mobile device, you will have to manually configure the connection.
  • Connection Name: UTRGV
  • Description: UTRGV
  • Connection Type:  SSL
  • Remote Gateway: vpn.utrgv.edu
  • Select Customize Port: 443
  • User Name: Your full UTRGV email address (i.e., myusername@utrgv.edu)
  • If you are using a Chromebook or other mobile device, ensure that the app has permission to storage.
  1. Click Connect.

Two-Factor Authentication

Before you can log in to UTRGV resources, you MUST establish a VPN connection using the VPN client (FortiClient) installed on your computer.

  1. Open the VPN client (FortiClient).

  2. Enter your credentials, then click Connect.

NOTE: If you chose DUO Push with DUO Mobile APP, you will receive a DUO Mobile notification on your smartphone.

  1. Tap Approve on the DUO Mobile App

NOTE - If you do not receive the DUO Mobile notifications:

  • Manually launch the app on your device and try again.
  • The DUO Mobile app provides a code for activated accounts. If for some reason, you do not receive a push on your DUO Mobile app, open the DUO Mobile app and tap your account to see the current code that can be used (add &code to the end of your password).  This can be a workaround if for some reason your DUO Mobile app is activated but not receiving pushes.  If needed, review this alternative - to receive a phone call.
  • If you set up your device using a landline (not the DUO app), you will receive a call from 956-665-2020. Answer the call and press any number on the dial pad to approve.
  1. You are now connected to VPN and may access UTRGV resources such as Banner or Peoplesoft.
