Create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection

Whenever possible, it's recommended to save files to your OneDrive or to a departmental SharePoint site for access from off-campus.

VPN access is automatically available to current employees.  Students must have a professor submit a Service Request to have their account manually configured for VPN access.

To create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection:

Microsoft Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) Registration (Required)

  1. Register for Microsoft Multifactor Authentication (MFA) This is used to confirm authentication to UTRGV resources.
  2. Install the FortiClient software on your computer. FortiClient establishes a secure VPN connection to the UTRGV network.

Install and Configure FortiClient VPN

FortiClient VPN is available for university laptops from the Software Center(PC) or Self Service(Mac) application.

For personally-owned computers, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to my.utrgv.edu.
  2. From the menu, click Help & Downloads.
  3. Click VPN.
  4. Select your operating system, then click to download and install software. NOTE: If a previous version of FortiClient VPN is already installed on the computer, it will need to be uninstalled prior to installing the new version.
  5. Launch the FortiClient application.
  6. The Connection Settings should be pre-populated during the install process. NOTE: Username and Password will need to be entered.  If you are using a Chromebook or mobile device, you will have to manually configure the connection.
  • Connection Name: UTRGV
  • Description: UTRGV
  • Connection Type:  SSL
  • Remote Gateway: vpn.utrgv.edu
  • Select Customize Port: 443 (ensure the associated checkbox for Port 443 is checked)
  • User Name: Your full UTRGV email address (i.e., myusername@utrgv.edu)
  • If you are using a Chromebook or other mobile device, ensure that the app has permission to storage.
  1. Click Connect.

Log In To VPN

Before you can log in to UTRGV resources, you MUST establish a VPN connection using the VPN client (FortiClient) installed on your computer.

  1. Open the VPN client application (FortiClient).
  2. Enter your credentials, then select Connect.
  3. Complete the Multifactor Authentication (MFA) prompts.  Tap Approve on the Microsoft Authenticator app, otherwise sign in using your default sign-in method (Call, Text, Code, etc).  NOTE:  Forticlient will only use your default sign-in method.
  4. You are now connected to VPN and may access UTRGV resources such as Banner, Peoplesoft, and other protected resources.
